Experience the diverse cultures of Ecuador during this 12 day group tour. During your tour through this beautiful country you will explore different fascinating landscapes of Ecuador. You will notice that its people is as diverse as the landscapes. From the Otavaleños and the Afro-Ecuadorians in the north, to the Quichua and Shuar in the rainforest to the Kichwa in the central of the Andes at the foothills of the Chimborazo volcano. Your tour will start from Quito where you will visit the historical center and the equator. In the following days you will be driving through the Andes Mountains to visit several places like Otavalo and Papallacta. You will also visit the rainforest where you will learn more about the medicinal plants, animals and experts from Pacari will show you how to make chocolate from local beans. Next to that you will visit several communities and the Shuar territory and perform the waterfall ceremony. After your rainforest adventure you will be heading to the south to visit Guamote and its lively market, Zumbahua, Chimborazo and the Cotopaxi National Park. During your tour you will be staying in comfortable Hotel, Hosteria and Lodges.

DAY 1 (D)
In the morning you will be visiting the colonial old town of Quito which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the colonial old town you will have a walk through the narrow streets to visit several plazas and beautiful churches. After the old town you will be visiting the equator monument called ‘Mitad del Mundo’. In the afternoon you will be heading to Otavalo. Overnight at Hotel Santa Fe.

DAY 2 (B, L)
In the morning you will have a 4-5 hour hike through the flora of the Andean highlands to explore the surroundings of the Cuicocha Crater. After the hike you will have a traditional lunch in Cotacachi and you will also visit a small archeological museum. In the afternoon you will visit the the famous Otavalo market where you have the opportunity to try the exotic fruits and vegetables. Overnight at Hotel Santa Fe.

DAY 3 (B, L)
Today you will take a train that will take you through Imbabura. The train ride will start in Otavalo and will take you to Salinas, where you can explore the culture and history of the Afro-Ecuadorians. Midway, the train will make several stops for you to have more insight of the history, music, gastronomy, craft and above all the fascinating scenery of the northern Andes. DAY 4 (B, D)
In the morning you can enjoy a morning walk in Otavalo to observe the lively market activity in Plaza de Poncho and the Andean culture of the Otavaleños. Following, you will continue over an Andean Pass with an altitude of 4050 meter ending in a valley at 3300 meter. Here you can enjoy the thermal baths of Papallacta. Due to its minerals, these waters will help you to gently exfoliate your skin and relax your body. In the afternoon you will arrive at the Hakuna Matata which is a cozy lodge middle in a private protected forest. Overnight at Hakuna Matata Lodge

DAY 5 (B, L, D)
After breakfast you will have a hike through the protected rainforest. During the hike your natural guide will explain you more about medicinal plants and animals that might be hiding in the dense green scenery. Later, you will be heading to a small village called Santa Rita where you will have a tasty jungle lunch. After your lunch an expert from Pacari will show you how they make chocolate from local cacao beans. In the afternoon you head back to the lodge where you have free time. Overnight at Hakuna Matata Lodge.

DAY 6 (B, L, D)
Early in the morning you and your guide will hop on a canoe along the Arajuno river to a clay lick to observe hundreds of parrots and parakeets. They come to feed on the clay from the mineral enriched ground, which helps them digest and detoxify from the poisons of their main diet. After the clay lick you will continue to the Quichua community of Santa Barbara where you can taste many local dishes in a typical jungle buffet with the community. Then you will drive to a small town in the jungle called Misahualli for a typical ‘Almuerzo’ (lunch). After the almuerzo you will have a small walk through the village to head backt to the lodge. afterwards. Overnight at Hakuna Matata Lodge.

DAY 7 (B, D)
After your breakfast you will drive to an Animal Rescue Center in Puyo to see some tropical animals of the Amazon and to meet monkeys face to face. From here you will head deeper into the rainforest to eventually end up in Macas. Here you can relax in the afternoon in a nice hosteria. Overnight Hosteria Luzcelinda.

DAY 8 (B, BL, D)
In the morning after breakfast, you will have a small drive to Shuar territory. Here you will have a hike in the rainforest to a sacred waterfall. At the waterfall you will try to perform the waterfall ceremony of the Shuar. Afterwards, you are able to soak yourself in the waterfall and try the typical food of the Shuar. Later in the day you will be cross the Andean highland to Guamote. Overnight at Inti Sisa Guesthouse.

DAY 9 (B, BL)
In the early morning you will visit the Andean market of Guamote. After the market you will explore the area and the small villages to have a better insight into the life of the Kichwa community. In the afternoon you will be heading to Riobamba which is surrounded by the mountains of Chimborazo, Carihuayrazo, El Altar and Tungurahua. Riobamba is considered to be the most important agriculture center of the Ecuadorian Andes. Overnight at Mansíon Santa Isabella.

After visiting the Guamote market you have the choice to drive to a small train station of Alausi and do the famous train ride. The train will pass the most difficult passage called ‘Devil’s Nose’. Here the train manages over 100 meter in altitude difference, in zigzag sweeps before it reaches Sibambe in the valley. After a short stay you will be heading back to Alausi to join the group again.

DAY 10 (B, BL)
Today you will be heading to Riobamba to visit the Chimborazo volcano which is the highest volcano in Ecuador. On your way to the volcano you will have a s top on 3000 meter altitude to visit the indigenous Kichwa community. Afterwards, you will be brought to the Hermanos Carrel refuge at 4800 meter altitude. From here you are able to hike to the Whymper refuge that is over 5000 meter in altitude. Later in the afternoon you will be heading to Latacunga.  Accommodation at Villa Tacunga.

DAY 11 (B, L, D)
After breakfast you will have a shot drive to the village of La Victoria. This village is famous for its traditional manufacture of ceramics. Later, you will continue to the Andean market of Zumbahua. Here you can experience the noisy and chaotic market before you head to the Quilotoa lagoon. During your hike at the lagoon you can enjoy the changing views and the surrounding Andes. Accommodation at Mama Hilda.

DAY 12 (B, L)
In the morning you will be heading to the 400 years old Hacienda la Cienega where you will enjoy a coffee break with a beautiful surrounding. After the coffee break you will explore the Cotopaxi National Park. You will have an easy educational hike around the Limpiopungo Lagoon where you will learn more about the typical vegetation of the Andes. Depending on the weather you will have an impressive view of the Cotopaxi volcano. Afterwards, you will have a lunch in the mountain refuge called Tambopaxi surrounded with the Sincholagua and Cotopaxi volcanos before heading back to Quito.

* Please bring your own rain poncho or buy it here in Ecuador and take it with you for the activities, the weather could change suddenly in the rainforest and you might get very wet.
