Napo is an Ecuadorian province, located at the eastern side of the country. Its capital is Tena. The province contains the majestic Napo River, which is one of the main affluents of the Amazonas. The thick rainforest is home to many natives that remain isolated by preference: descendants of those who avoid the Spanish invasion in the Andes and the Inca’s years before. Tena, the capital, is known as the Cinnamon capital of Ecuador, originally founded by missionary explorers and is located at 420m above sea level with a temperature between 25˚C and 32˚C  (77˚F – 89˚F). Tena is famous for the rainforest and the rivers that surround it. It has some of the best rafting and kayaking activities in Ecuador. The lodge of this program in located 20 minutes away by public or private transportation from Tena city, making it very easy to access and it is on the banks of the huge Napo river.

DAY 2 (B, L, D):
Your first day in the Amazon Rainforest starts with a fresh breakfast in the open restaurant. Next, you embark the canoe to travel across the Napo River. Keep your eyes open, because birds, and maybe even monkeys, are always hiding in the trees. Prior to arrival in the village of Misahualli, local authorities conduct a routine control for which you need to bring your passport. After a short walk through the village, the group continues to the AmaZOOnico Rescue Center, a foundation dedicated to the rescue and recovery of animals that were victims of illegal trafficking. During this visit, you learn about the foundation´s work and observe Amazon species, such as toucans, sloths, monkeys, and wild cats. Today’s lunch is a delightful picnic on the riverbank, after which you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the river. By canoe you search for caimans around Anaconda Island, to subsequently desembark and explore the small island by foot. Back at the lodge, you have the opportunity to make artisanal chocolate during a workshop. This wonderful day ends with a nice dinner and relaxing around the fireplace or at the bar.

Your professional guide leads you through the secondary rainforest where you have the opportunity to see tropical birds and monkeys playing in the treetops. Upon arrival at the waterfall ‘La Cascada de Latas’, you can bath in the crystal clear water while enjoying the serene environment and jungle sounds. This is an amazing experience in the middle of nature! You can return to the lodge by foot, canoe, or even by tube if you feel adventurous. In the afternoon you learn about the local flora and fauna and how the Amazon people use particular plants for medicinal purposes, during a hike through the primary rainforest. Women of the village show you around and tell you about the crops they grow, such as yucca (cassava), banana, and cocoa. Also, you witness how these Quechua women produce pottery and share other traditional domestic skills. They offer you the typical drink of the jungle,´Chicha de Yuca´, a fermented beverage that is very important in social events. Subsequently, members of the community show you the traditional methods of searching for gold and fishing on the shores of the Napo River. This excursion is not just about listening and watching; you are part of these local activities! In the afternoon you visit the Paytawe Lagoon, a lake with a very high diversity of birds. During this one-hour canoe trip, you have the opportunity to spot different bird species, such as the pre-historic hoatzins, woodpeckers, and Gallinula purpura. With some luck, you might also see monkeys, sloths, armadillos, or other animals. Afterwards, you return to the lodge to enjoy the facilities and the beautiful surroundings.
