Hi everyone! Here you can read my experiences with our private Papallacta day tour. But before I share my experiences with you, let me briefly explain about Papallacta.

Papallacta is a small town in Ecuador, east of Quito. The town is located at an altitude of 3250 meters (10600 feet), in the Andes mountain range. Papallacta is famous for its thermal baths, which have several health benefits. The water is full of minerals which will exfoliate your skin and helps your body relax. For an additional fee you can also enjoy additional services such as massages, facials and aromatherapy.

Now you know a bit about Papallacta, here is my summary of the day. The day started off with a hotel pickup by our guide, Ivan. He drove us to the town of Papallacta, which was a 1.5 hour drive. On our way, Ivan explained a bit about the program of the day, about Papallacta, and he answered any question we had. Also, whenever we drove past an important or beautiful sight such as lakes or volcanos, he would tell us about it and stopped shortly so we could take pictures.

When we arrived in Papallacta, we stopped for hot chocolate in a small local restaurant. The hot chocolate was delicious and the old lady working at the restaurant was very kind and adorable. After our drink, we continued driving to the thermal baths. But before we could go into the pools to relax, we went on a short hike, next to the baths.

This hike took about an hour and Ivan again told us a lot about the surroundings, animals and plants. It was a beautiful setting because we were walking in between the mountains, and along the river. It was a very peaceful and quiet area, so we could enjoy nature at its best!

After the short hike, it was finally time to go to the thermal baths! There are nine different pools, which differ in hot or cold water. And when I say hot and cold, I mean very hot and very cold! One pool is even filled with water from the river, which is extremely cold but also very healthy! We started out in one of the hot baths and we stayed in for approximately 20 minutes. Which is, by the way, the maximum amount of time they recommend you to stay in the hot water. After that we took a quick dip in one of the cold baths, and after that we took a short rest, which is also recommended. Then we got into the hot pool again for about 10 minutes. After that we decided to get dry and lie in the sun for a while, before getting changed again.

After we were all ready, clean and relaxed again, Ivan picked us up for lunch. We went to another local restaurant in Papallacta where we had a 2 course lunch. As a starter we had a delicious chicken soup. For the main course we could choose between chicken or trout, which is very fresh in Papallacta because they catch the trout from the nearby river. Ivan even bought a large beer for us all to share, and we got a delicious strawberry juice as well.

After lunch, we were ready to head back to Quito again. When we arrived in Quito, we visited the Mercado Artesenal, where they sold many local items such as scarfs and sweaters from alpaca wool, jewellery, bags, chocolate and many more. After this, Ivan brought us back to the hotel.

Long story short, it was a very interesting and fun day! We learned something about this part of Ecuador and its nature, and we got back very relaxed and revitalized! So if you want to escape the large city or feel like relaxing during your trip, Papallacta is the place to go!
