Cuzco is situated in the Peruvian Andes and it is the former capital of the Inca empire. In the 16th century Cuzco was conquered by the Spanish, which nowadays makes this city a nice mix between Inca ruins and colonial buildings. One of Cuzco’s many highlights is the Plaza de Armas, where you can also find Cuzco’s Cathedral. There are many excursions possible from Cuzco such as to Ollantaytambo, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and of course to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu, also known as the Lost City of the Incas, was built in the 15th century, but was only rediscovered in 1911 by the American professor Bingham. This sacred city is situated at approximately 2400 meters (7875 ft) above sea level and it is about 130 kilometers (80 mi) from Cuzco. Since 1983 Machu Picchu is a UNESCO world heritage site and in 2007 it was elected one of the ‘new 7 world wonders’. The Peruvian Amazone, especially the Puerto Maldonado region, is a  relatively unknown area and it is only being researched since the 1950s. There are many different wild animals in the Amazon area, like Capybara, parrots, tapirs, and Hoatzin birds. The southern Amazon region is warm and humid all year long and it has an average temperature of 26 °C (79°F).
